Kosher Restaurants and Eateries

Kosher dining opportunities continue to grow...

The opportunities for kosher consumers in Kansas City continue to multiply. While there is no longer a freestanding, independent kosher butcher shop in the area, fresh kosher meat can be purchased at Hen House Market, 11721 Roe Ave., in Leawood, KS 66211. Its Kosher Island features a delicatessen with such items such as rotisserie and fried chicken, beef brisket, deli sliced meats, salads and other meat and pareve items.  Several shelves are devoted to kosher dry goods.  Also, the Hen House bakery department offers dairy cakes, cookies, Tippins pies and a variety of pareve breads and packaged pareve items.

The Rams Café, located within the Jewish Community Center, operated by the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy PTO, is open Monday through Friday during the school year (closed on holidays and school vacations). Patrons can enjoy breakfast, lunch and snack foods. It is run solely by volunteers -- primarily HBHA parents and grandparents -- as well as some members of the Jewish community at large. The proceeds benefit the HBHA PTO and help to support all the programs and events that the PTO sponsors throughout the school year. For current hours or more information, call (913) 327-8207.

Rachel’s Café, located at Village Shalom, 5500 W. 123rd St. in Overland Park is a kosher lunch spot and gathering place reminiscent of an upscale coffee shop.  Rachel’s Café offers a selection of salads, sandwiches and desserts, as well as pizza and hot daily specials.  There are “grab-and-go” items as well as made-to-order meals.  Hours are 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 913-266-8422.  See the attached menu below.

The Jewish Heritage Center located within the Jewish Community Center offers lunch at noon, Monday through Friday to adults 65+ and their companions (spouse, guest, family).  The cost is $4 and advance reservations are required by 9:00 a.m. each day by calling 913-327-8043.  Frozen items such as kugel and cabbage rolls are available for carry-out from Bubbe’s Kitchen, 8 am - 1 pm.; available to anyone of any age.  After 1 pm, call 913-327-8043 for pick up and availability. All proceeds benefit the Heritage Center.

Several other opportunities await kosher consumers throughout the year. Princess Gardens Restaurant, 8906 Wornall Road in Kansas City, MO., regularly schedules Sunday-evening events where diners can choose to eat in or take out authentic Chinese food. These events are generally publicized a few weeks in advance in the Jewish Chronicle. For more information, call Princess Gardens, (816) 444-3709. Note the following date for Kosher dining in 2011:

Sundays-
December 18th

Kehilath Israel Sisterhood regularly schedules a dining opportunity known as KI Bistro, also under KC Vaad supervision. The menu changes for each event. Advance reservations are necessary, and diners can eat in or take out. For more information, call KI, (913) 642-1880.

Several other venues are capable of hosting individual kosher events, including the Sheraton Hotel at Crown Center, the Westin Hotel at Crown Center, the Overland Park Convention Center and Oakwood Country Club. To learn what venues can be certified kosher, call 913-341-2444 or 913-327-4623.

Many private caterers in the area are also capable of providing kosher food supervised and certified by the KC Vaad. For a list of recommended caterers, contact the KC Vaad, 913 341-2444 or 913 327-4623.
